Flat Conversations
Performance
Video, Projection, Costume Design, Lighting + Set Design and Choreography
2017-2018
In 2017, “Flat Conversations” was a choreographed dance performance supplemented with a set design based on my study of the pedestrian usage of smartphones in NYC. The choreography and video included repetitive movements around the constraints of moving through the world with a cellular device in hand. An article in the New York Times reads, “You see them everywhere: people walking with their eyes glued to their mobile phone screens on busy streets. But walking and texting can be dangerous.” The pedestrian-smartphone relationship pervades the streets, sidewalks, and parks of America. There is a choice that individuals make between two types of presence: virtual vs. physical. Which do you place precedence on as you walk down the street?
